"Gaitway To Independence" An Interactive Health Fair for diabetes sufferers, amputees and those in wheelchairs

Sacramento, California - May 10, 2007 - Leaders
in the healthcare community will host a free, interactive health fair to
share the most up-to-date information on medical care for those dealing with
the reality of amputation and to provide information on viable mobility
alternatives for those in wheelchairs. Lectures and information will also be provided on mobility alternatives to achieve total freedom and access for those in wheelchairs. Diabetic screenings will be available, as will assessment clinics for prosthetics, orthotics and pedorthics that will feature the latest advancements in those areas. Accessible vehicle demonstrations and home accessibility options will also be offered. Information booths will be hosted by: The
American Diabetes Association; Otto Bock HealthCare; the ALS Foundation; Paratransit Inc. of Sacramento; Disabled
Sports of America; Americans with Disabilities Association; physical
therapists; holistic medicine and chiropractors. |

Brent Kuemmerle / Amputee Rock Climber & Snowboarder |
|
Brent lost his right leg below the knee in 1995 after being struck by a truck. An avid rock climber, he refused to give up the sport he loved and was back at it just six months following his amputation. Since then, he’s also taken up snowboarding and brings his knowledge of both sports to countless others through teaching. In addition to competing in climbing extremity games, in 2001 Brent competed in the United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA) in the adaptive division for snowboarding. He currently holds the highest adaptive snowboarding certification available, and twice a year travels to Colorado to teach the sport to disabled veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Brent is employed as a climbing guide at Lover’s Leap in Lake Tahoe.

| Alex lost both his legs 24 years ago when his car slammed into a moving train. Now the father of three, he faces life head-on with the mantra: “NEVER Quit!” Alex is a member of the USA Olympic Cycling Team, winning the 2004 Paralympic silver medal in that sport. An active community speaker, Alex champions for the physically challenged. He is an inspiration to all he meets, sharing his philosophy of overcoming obstacles, making choices for a healthy lifestyle and training with a dream in sight. | |

Dr. Jan Ertl |
| Dr. Ertl has been an orthopedic surgeon for more than 20 years. He is active in treating orthopedic trauma, sports injuries, and performs amputation reconstruction. Dr. Ertl is the author of numerous articles and chapters on the osteomyoplastic amputation procedure that utilizes the body’s ability for regeneration and healing. The procedure provides the patient with a functional, prosthetic-bearing limb. This procedure has now become known as the Ertl procedure. One of Dr. Ertl’s most recent patients was Heather Mills, who had a successful run on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Dr. Ertl is also an in-demand lecturer on the national and international level. | |
